American
life has gotten out of balance and taken us with it.
Long hours at work, obligations of home and family, perhaps an
extra project at church or a decision to go back to school, and a pace
that most race horses would find tough to keep up with, all add up to a
bone-deep, long-term exhaustion and the ailments that go with it.
Who has time for finding inner balance, restored harmony, and the
joy that comes with perfect wellbeing?
In reality, we don't have the time not
to. Life, after all, is short. What are we waiting for?
Let's
define retreat as time away from normal, day-to-day life. In this
sense, even vacation time is a form of retreat, and a good one at
that. However let's name the concept at hand as a Retreat to Serenity. This kind of retreat is best
accomplished alone, away from phone, television, computer, and other
modern distractions.
Why are
time alone and serenity so important? Because it is inside the quiet
that we finally meet up with ourselves. In case you haven't
realized, you are by far and away the most amazing person you will ever know.
Sadly, with modern living, most of us never get to make our own
acquaintance.
An
optimal retreat, then, is one wherein you are alone in a quiet place with
little distraction. If this quiet place can also give you access to
nature, then you will have your perfect teacher there with you. Who
better than nature to model serenity, silence, stillness, healing, and
wellbeing.
Find time in
your life for retreat; daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and perhaps even a
coveted "sabbatical" of sorts every few years. Only you
can be the designer of your retreat time so feel free to create something
perfect for you.

For
those who cannot create their own retreat, there are organized
retreats. The one I have lead is called the Intuitive Wellness Retreat.
As
a healer, it has long been my theory that if people could get away from
it all for a little while (preferably, FAR away), and be surrounded by
solitude, healthy food and exercise, a little pampering, the
sounds of the waves on the beach, a chance to give and receive
unconditional love, and some time to focus on their own inner healer,
they could reclaim their balance and deep cellular memories of how it
feels to reconnect with their own birth-rite to wellbeing.
And if they could find that long, deep sigh (ahhhhh....) of
contentment, health and enthusiasm for being alive would come rushing
back.
Some
years ago, to test my theory, I lead a group of 10 brave souls off to
the wilds of remote and rural Mexico for a weeklong Intuitive Wellness
retreat. We stretched our
bones in yoga class, high on a hillside where we could watch the
fisherman return with their catches to the bay and the beach below us.
We laughed and shared our adventures of wandering through little
villages and discovering beautiful, white-sand beaches, over gourmet,
vegetarian meals, served up without our having to lift a finger.
We cried as we learned about the Mexican tradition of the Day of
the Dead and what it meant to invite our dead ones to join us in our
healing. We soared off to
the Meadow of Intuition and the Island of Perfect Balance in guided
relaxations that showed us that we really do have access to our own
inner healer. And so much
more. It was a lot of fun,
but I knew my theory had been proven out when on the third day, I looked
around the communal dining table and saw 10, glowing, and absolutely
beautiful faces smiling back at me.
By the end of the week, this group was certifiably resplendent.
It
was wonderful to have some of my
theories and visions fulfilled and even exceeded, but even more
importantly, here's what I learned.
Wellbeing really is our natural state.
Not only that, but it doesn't take all that long to re-gain it.

an Intuitive Wellness Retreat sounds like just what the doctor ordered,
